Meningeal Tumours: a Review.
نویسنده
چکیده
The tumours to be considered here are those arising primarily in the meninges, or gaining access to them as secondary growths. It will be necessary to consider not only the dura and leptomeninges that invest the brain and spinal cord, but also their extensions into the brain as the tela choroidea and stroma of the choroid plexuses, and the sheaths of the perforating blood-vessels that form the outer boundary of the Virchow-Robin spaces. In the vertebral canal the separation of the dura from the bone by the epidural adipose and areolar tissue, and the resolution of the arachnoid and pia into two distinct membranes, introduce additional factors that are of importance, especially in the direct spread of tumours and the dissemination of their cells by the cerebrospinal fluid. Although little has been heard of it lately, the old controversy as to whether the meninges are of mesodermal or of ectodermal origin cannot be regarded as satisfactorily resolved. In practice, however, it is undisputed that the primary meningeal tumours (meningiomas) display many features in common with mesodermal tumours in other parts of the body; the question of embryological origin is thus purely academic.

Spectrum of Central Nervous System Tumours--a Single Center Histopathological Review of 761 Cases over 5 Years.
BACKGROUND The incidence of central nervous system (CNS) tumours has rapidly increased over the past few years. There is no accurate nationwide CNS tumour epidemiology in Pakistan that makes policy making for tumour screening and early treatment difficult. The purpose of this study was to provide the spectrum of CNS tumours in a premier diagnostic and referral centre of Pakistan. METHODS This...
متن کاملRadiotherapy techniques for intracranial tumours
ABSTRACTIntracranial tumours often require radiotherapeutic approaches that differ from other sites. Their specific requirements merit a specialized discussion. A brief review of radiotherapy techniques to treat intracranial tumours is presented with emphasis on the author’s own experience and work, where appropriate. A clinical introduction is presented first followed by a description of bot...
متن کاملIsolated Meningeal Recurrence of Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder
Meningeal carcinomatosis occurs in 1-18% of patients with solid tumours, most commonly carcinomas of the breast and lung or melanomas. There are relatively few reports of meningeal carcinomatosis in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Isolated meningeal recurrence is particularly uncommon, and we present an unusual case of this in a 58-year-old man. The case was further complicated by t...
متن کاملMeninges in cancer imaging
Primary malignant tumours arising from the meninges are distinctly uncommon, and when they occur, they are usually sarcomas. In contrast, metastatic meningeal involvement is increasingly seen as advances in cancer therapy have changed the natural history of malignant disease and prolonged the life span of cancer patients. The meninges can either be infiltrated by contiguous extension of primary...
متن کاملALDH1 is an immunohistochemical diagnostic marker for solitary fibrous tumours and haemangiopericytomas of the meninges emerging from gene profiling study
BACKGROUND Solitary Fibrous Tumours (SFT) and haemangiopericytomas (HPC) are rare meningeal tumours that have to be distinguished from meningiomas and more rarely from synovial sarcomas. We recently found that ALDH1A1 was overexpressed in SFT and HPC as compared to soft tissue sarcomas. Using whole-genome DNA microarrays, we defined the gene expression profiles of 16 SFT/HPC (9 HPC and 7 SFT). ...
